2nd Half Dooms Cougars vs. Moberly; MACC 60, ICC 44
Turnovers and poor second half shooting led to a 60-44 loss to Moberly Area CC for the #5 ICC women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon. ICC only mustered a 5-23 shooting effort (22%) after halftime, (including a stretch of 1-19 until the last three minutes of the game) and gave the ball away 23 times on turnovers (leading to 24 MACC points). Moberly also held a commanding edge on the boards, outrebounding the Cougars 45-27, including 19 offensive rebounds, which they turned into 14 points. ICC is now 12-4 overall, while Moberly moves to 16-0 on the season.
Two Madison Faulkner baskets (assists Sia Williams) got ICC on the board, but MACC was the aggressor, taking a 9-4 lead the first three minutes of the game. ICC caught up to 11-all on a basket and three free throws from Abby Coates and a Jasmine Levy basket, but ICC missed a box out on the last possession of the quarter and Moberly banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a 14-11.
Levy connected on two baskets start the second period, but the Greyhounds countered and took a 25-17 advantage, but the Cougars steadily chipped away, starting with two free throws by Coates and then Faulkner scored seven straight points on an offensive put back, a jumper in the lane (assist Coates), and a three-pointer (assist Larsen) to draw to within 27-26. The Cougars forced a MACC turnover and held for the last shot of the quarter, but a costly turnover led to a wide-open layup just before the buzzer to give the Greyhounds a 29-26 lead.
A lid formed on the basket in the second half for the Cougars as they managed to score only six free throws in the third quarter, while shooting 0-11 from the field, allowing Moberly to take a 44-32 lead into the final period. Faulkner finally scored a hoop (assist Walker) at the 8:15 mark making it 48-34, but the Cougars showed no fight and MACC went on a 12-0 run to put the game away. ICC did score ten points in the final 3:06 to make the score somewhat respectable, but the Greyhounds walked out with the easy win.

Note of Thanks
The Cougars would like to thank the Central Illinois Dependents, a Special Recreation basketball team from Marquette Heights for athletes ages 8 and up, for playing hoops at halftime today. The CID organization has two teams, the Saints and the Angels, who practiced with the Cougar ladies back on December 28th. Eleven players from the Saints’ team played at halftime and cheered the Cougars on. Ron and Eva Bellinger are the founders of the organization, which started in 2017.
