Strong 2nd Half Lifts Cougars Over Braves, 76 – 45

The ICC women’s basketball team defeated Black Hawk College (Moline) 76-45 at Ramsey Gym on Tuesday evening. The ladies, who moved up to #5 in this week’s NJCAA DII poll, used 43 points off the bench (to BHC’s 14) and dished out 24 team assists to score 34 field goals to get their 8th win of the season (8-2 overall).

ICC darted out to an 11-4  lead behind a Madison Faulkner basket, Emma Henderson three-pointer (assists Aubrey Magro), Kellyn Maynard layup (Henderson assist), and two Kathy Pinnock Branford scores (assists Bailey Larsen). The hosts played strong defense at the beginning, holding the Braves to just five points in the quarter, while Magro and Sia Williams added scores to give ICC a 15-5 first stanza lead.

On the first possession of the second quarter, Magro hit a jumper (assist Williams) to make the score 17-5, but “tis the season to be jolly” so we will just report that the halftime score was only a 25-18 advantage for the Cougars and leave out the details of a near eight-minute scoring drought and fast forward to the second half.

The scoring drought lingered into the start of the third quarter as ICC only scored one field goal in the first three minutes (a Magro drive to the paint) but once it rained, it poured, and the Cougars went on a 16-0 run to take complete control of the game. The run was started by a Henderson basket (assist Williams) and then Krystal Walker, Larsen, Abby Coates, and Maynard all combined with either baskets, steals, or assists to fuel the run, and what had been a narrow 27-20 lead was now a 43-22 advantage just three minutes later and the Cougar fans now had a reason to be jolly!

ICC took a 51-27 advantage into the final period and added to that as Larsen, Walker (5 points) and Pinnock-Branford scores pushed the lead to 61-30 with 6:52 remaining.  The Cougars kept the ball moving on offense against the BHC zone and cruised to the final margin.
