Ladies Roll Over IVCC, 91 – 54
During their nine-day layoff, the #6 ICC Women’s Basketball team worked on pushing the ball up the floor and playing better full-court team defense. That practice time paid off as ICC had a balanced effort on both ends of the floor (28 assists, 27 steals) to cruise to a 91-54 victory over Illinois Valley CC on Saturday afternoon at Ramsey Gym. The Cougars shot 50% on the day with every Cougar scoring to move their record to 7-2 overall, while IVCC dropped to 7-5.
Aubrey Magro and Abby Coates combined for eight of the Cougars’ first ten points, helping the home team take a 10-4 lead and go up 14-7 after one quarter of play. With ICC leading 18-12, Krystal Walker, Magro, and Kellyn Maynard kick-started a 14-2 run midway through the second period to break the game open and eventually give ICC a 34-19 halftime lead.
ICC came out with more purpose to start the second half, as Maynard scored inside on a Walker assist, followed by a Madison Faulkner free throw and a Coates old-fashioned three-point play to put the Cougars up 40-21. ICC continued to pressure the Eagles in the back-court and push the ball ahead in transition to open a 61-36 lead heading into the final period. Other highlights for the second half included: a full-court pass from Faulkner to Coates for a score, an Isreal Evans layup with just the right English on it to garner a three-point play, Bailey Larsen cutting the lane for an easy jumper, Kathy Pinnock-Branford pressuring the ball and snagging steals, an Emma Henderson steal and layup to close out the 3rd quarter, a Walker pass to Sia Williams for a layup, a crafty Maynard Euro-step for a lay-in, and a Coates pass for a Magro three-ball which all contributed to the Cougar win.
