Cougars Pull Away form Rock Valley, 80 – 69
Abby Coates’s career high 23 points helped carry #18 ICC to an 80-69 victory over Rock Valley College on Wednesday night (Nov. 29) at Ramsey Gym. The freshman forward from Metamora scored ten points in the final period to help the Cougars pull away, while the ladies overall as a team dished out 27 assists to net 31 field goals, moving their record to 6-2 overall.
The Cougars looked like they would run away with this one early, as Aubrey Magro swished a three-pointer on the first possession (assist Kellyn Maynard), followed by a Madison Faulkner bucket (assist Coates), an old-fashioned three-point play by Coates (assist Magro), and a Bailey Larsen trey (assist Sia Williams) to give ICC a 12-4 lead just three minutes into the game. RVC heated up from the perimeter as the Cougars got careless with the basketball (six turnovers to finish off the quarter) and the hosts took a narrow 20-18 first quarter lead.
Kathy Pinnock-Branford sparked ICC to start the second quarter with a basket, a steal, an assist to Coates, and an offensive rebound that led to a Larsen score to put ICC up 28-23. RVC rallied back to tie the score, but scores by Faulkner, Larsen, and four points by Walker gave the Cougars a 36-32 halftime lead.
Scoring was sporadic to start the half until ICC got a spark from Emma Henderson who nailed a long-range bomb as the shot clock expired (assist Pinnock-Branford) and followed that up with two free throws to take a 42-36 lead. RVC kept pace, however, charging back to grab the lead at 48-47 minutes later. Walker answered with a three-point play, followed by two Coates freebies and a basket by Maynard to go up 57-52 heading into the final stanza.
The Cougars stretched their lead to 66-56 on a Maynard layup (Williams assist), Larsen field goal (Pinnock-Branford assist), Coates field goal (assist Maynard), and Williams trey (assist Maynard) with 7:52 and finally, the Eagles started to run out of gas. Coates and Faulkner took matters into their own hands to score 14 of the final 16 points to get the Cougars their first win in Ramsey Gym this season.
