Ladies Defeat Tritons: #18 ICC 60, Iowa Central 51
The motto “slow and steady wins the race” described the ICC women’s basketball team’s 60-51 win over Iowa Central in the Kirkwood Classic on Friday, November 10 in Cedar Rapids, IA. The Cougars stuck to the game plan of sharing the ball offensively and made strides in their full court defense to gain the win.
Bailey Larsen opened the scoring with a three-pointer from the top of the key (assist Sia Williams). ICC led 7-5 but the Tritons took the lead back at 13-9 before a Kennedy Banks offensive putback and four Kellyn Maynard points put the Cougars up 15-13 after one quarter.
The teams played virtually even in the second quarter, with highlights coming on a Williams trey in the right corner, a nice post feed from Aubrey Magro (Rochester HS) to her high school teammate Madison Faulkner, and Emma Henderson (Tuscola HS) getting her first college points on a mid-range pull-up. Larsen also connected on a three-ball to end the half, giving ICC a 33-28 halftime advantage.
The Cougars picked up their defense in the third, hurrying Iowa Central into quick shots, but ICC could not convert consistently either. Banks’ jumper at the 3:00 mark started a 6-0 and ICC was up 44-39 heading into the final stanza.
ICC held a 49-43 lead after a Williams’ runner, but the Tritons twice trimmed their deficit to one point (at 49-48 and 52-51) but Abby Coates scored on a set play (assist Williams) that propelled the Cougars to finish the contest on an 8-0 run for the final margin. High fives to the Cougs as they forced five turnovers and went 8-10 from the free throw line in the final period.
Only scoring stats were given, so here are those numbers:
Larsen (11pts), Maynard & Faulkner (10pts each), Walker (7pts), Williams (7pts), Coates (6pts), Banks (4pts), Magro & Henderson (2pts each), Pinnock-Branford (1pt).
