Cougars Suffer First Loss: #8 North Iowa Area CC 99, #18 ICC 82
The #18 ICC women’s basketball team suffered a 99-82 loss to #9 North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA on Friday, November 3 in both team’s season opening game at the annual Konigsmark Klassic. The Cougars took the lead early, but several missed opportunities in the paint, at the free throw line, as well as having 28 turnovers allowed NIACC to seize control of the game and get the win.
Two freshmen helped get the Cougars on the board, with Madison Faulkner (Rochester HS) and Abby Coates (Metamora HS) scoring inside, followed by six Kellyn Maynard (PBL HS) points to give ICC a 12-7 lead just four minutes into the game. NIACC turned up the pressure, forcing ICC into 7 turnovers the rest of the quarter, allowing the hosts to go on a 20-6 run and take a 27-18 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
NIACC’s lead ballooned to 38-20, before six straight points by sophomore Kennedy Banks (Dunlap HS) gave ICC a much-needed boost. Maynard also keyed the surge, converting offensive rebounds into points and trimming the Cougar deficit to 55-45 at the half.
The Trojans held a double digit lead the entire second half, and just when the Cougars would make a run, NIACC would answer and dash any hopes of a true Cougar comeback. Highlights of the second half included some nice high-low plays from Faulkner and Coates, some aggressive drives to the basket by freshman Sia Williams (Fort Lauderdale, FL), and scrappy defensive work by the Cougars as a unit. ICC did share the ball well, dishing out 22 assists on the night.
Maynard (24 pts, 21 reb), Faulkner (14 pts, 7 reb), Coates (12 pts, 10 reb) Williams (10 pts), Banks (10 pts), Evans (6pts, 4 reb), Pinnock-Branford (5 asts, 3 pts), Magro (4 asts, 3 pts).
