Illinois Central College Music Program Presents Recital Moods a la Mode ** CANCELLED **

The Illinois Central College Music Program presents Moods a la Mode, a free recital featuring flutist Abigail Walsh and pianist Dr. Pei-I Wang, as part of the college’s annual Arts Week. This performance takes place Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 pm in Lecture/Recital Hall Room 127F located on the first floor of the Academic Building of the East Peoria Campus.
This recital features music in which composers were inspired by or used Gregorian church modes and exotic scales (pentatonic, whole tone, 12-tone) in order to tell a story or create a mood. “Mode” in this title has a double meaning- the first referring to various modes (scales) and the second “a la mode” meaning “in fashion”. While some of the pieces are staples in the flute repertoire some are less known despite the high quality imagery they create. A brief introduction to each piece will give listeners a lens into the story, mood, or compositional technique of the work.
A versatile and passionate performer and educator, Walsh is an applied music specialist at the University of Illinois-Springfield and flute instructor at Illinois College. She teaches master classes and performs in solo and chamber recitals regularly. She has performed at four National Flute Association (NFA) conventions, including the Wisconsin, Mid-Atlantic, Chicago and Iowa Flute Festivals. Walsh has been featured soloist with the Cedar Rapids, Decatur and Taylorville Municipal Bands as well as with various groups at the University of Iowa, the Hartt School, the University of Illinois-Springfield and through the Engelbach-Hart Music Festival. She has been a prize winner or finalist in the NFA Piccolo Artist Competition, the Washington Society Young Artist Competition and the Emeritus Recording Competition.
Originally from Taiwan, Wang received her doctor of musical arts in piano performance and literature from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. She has received awards in various competitions, such as the National Music Competition in Taiwan, the UIUC Concerto Competition and the Liszt-Garrison International Competition. Wang is a nationally certified teacher of music in piano. She has been involved with and performed in the operas and musical productions of Blackburn College, Millikin University, Soochow University, UIUC, Gloriana Chamber Choir, Sinfonia da Camera and Station Theatre.
The event is presents as part of Arts Week 2018 at ICC, a week of concerts, events and exhibits from April 16 through April 20 on the East Peoria campus. Arts Week showcases and celebrates for the public the diversity of arts at Illlinois Central College.
