Illinois Central College S.I.G.N. Club will host Deaf Idol 2016 on Saturday, April 16, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm, in the ICC Performing Arts Center on the East Peoria Campus. The event features contestants from the deaf community performing songs, stories, poetry, skits and more in American Sign Language for a grand prize. Judges will select the top five contestants to present to the audience to determine the winner.
“The purpose of the event is to promote and enrich the deaf community with opportunities to experience ASL culture and to see the wide variety of backgrounds for the contestants,” said ICC Adjunct Faculty and S.I.G.N. Club Advisor DiAnn Sances.
ICC’s ASL students graduating in May also will be performing their special projects with group songs and Deaf culture stories in ASL. There will be two voice interpreters available for the hearing fans in the audience, and “I Love You” pillows, t-shirts and more will be available for purchase in the Performing Arts Center lobby beginning at 1 pm.
Advanced tickets may be purchased from any S.I.G.N. Club officer for $5 per adult and children ages 13 and up. Ages 12 and under are free. Tickets will be available at the door for $7 for adults and children ages 13 and up. Tickets for children age 12 and under are free.
