The Philharmonic Chorale, now in its 89th year, will present its annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 8, at 3 pm in the Performing Arts Center at Illinois Central College, East Peoria. Admission for “Christmas with the Philharmonic Chorale” is $12 ($10 for students and seniors). The Philharmonic Chorale is in residence at Illinois Central College.
The concert opens with four tributes to the Virgin Mary: Pergolesi’s energetic Magnificat Anima Mea Dominum , Busto’s hauntingly beautiful Ave Maria, Bebbington’s rhythmic arrangement of Blessed Be that Maid Marie, and Benjamin Britten’s very touching and simple A Hymn to the Virgin.
Completing the first half of the concert, the chorale will sing Jan Sweelinck ‘s joyful motet, Gaudete Omnes. Also included in this section they will present John Siler’s How Far to Bethlehem, and a familiar Catalan carol, Fum, Fum, Fum.
The second half of the concert includes numerous familiar Christmas pieces, such as Variations on Deck the Hall, the traditional Wassail Song, and a new setting of O Come All Ye Faithful.
The program includes four more familiar carols with the purpose of audience participation. Following the concert, the audience is invited to a cookies and punch reception.
