Philharmonic Chorale presents “An Afternoon of Music” Sunday, May 4

The Philharmonic Chorale, completing its 89th year as a local performing group, presents An Afternoon of Music with the Philharmonic Chorale on Sunday, May 4, at 3 pm in the Illinois Central College Performing Arts Center, located on the East Peoria Campus.

Tickets cost $12 for the general public and $10 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased online at ArtsAtICC.com or by calling the ICC Performing Arts Center box office at (309) 694-5136.

The concert will open with Haydn’s lively Gloria from his “Heiligemesse” of 1796, and continues with two more pieces from the great masters: the hauntingly beautiful Agnus Dei by Edward Elgar and the joyful motet, Exultate Deo, composed by Alessandro Scarlatti. Also included in the opening section is the stirring and poignant Navy Hymn, Eternal Father Strong to Save. The next part of the program features three rhythmically driving spirituals, including Soon Ah Will Be Done, which starts with a conventional opening but soon kicks into a fun and funky gospel groove.

The concert continues with three beloved American folk songs, including Peace Like a River and a beautiful Irish ballad, Red Is the Rose, which was written by an anonymous poet in County Kerry, western Ireland. It is sung to the familiar Scottish air “Loch Lomond.” The concert concludes with a humorous excursion into the Forest of Loo, and a foot-stomping version of another American folk-tune, The Unclouded Day.

A reception will follow in the studio theatre of the Performing Arts Center.
