Dear ICC family –
While the horrific event which took place at Umpqua Community College last week occurred at a geographical distance of more than 2,000 miles away, it impacted all of us here at ICC on a very personal level. As a sister community college, we reached out to the Umpqua administrators and staff last week to offer our condolences and support as they begin the difficult task of processing the event, of supporting the victims’ families and friends, and in finding the strength to endure for the benefit of the faculty, staff and students who remain.
The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) have called for a national moment of silence as a unified demonstration of support for Umpqua Community College, which will take place on Thursday, October 8, at 1 pm CST. If you are so inclined, I encourage you to pause for just a moment to hold the victims, their families, the college and the entire community of Roseburg, Oregon, in your thoughts and prayers.
Recent events such as these are, unfortunately, ever-increasingly serving as a difficult reminder that we all need to be prepared when it comes to personal safety. Please know that ICC holds the safety of our students, faculty and staff as our number one priority.
I encourage you all to visit the Campus Police webpage and view or review the “Run, Hide, Fight” six-minute video under the “Active Shooter Training” link under the Emergency Procedures heading. Also, please note the link to the Emergency Response Guide located under the Emergency Procedures heading. This guide has been recently updated and covers many emergency situations, including active shooter, weather and many others.
Thank you in advance for your participation and support.
