ICC’s College for Kids Program Offering “Club Code” Classes

Illinois Central College’s popular College for Kids program will offer two levels of “Club Code” classes beginning in January for students currently in grades 7 and 8 who are interested in computers and learning to write code, build websites, apps, games and more.

The clubs meet on Thursdays from January 21 through February 25, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, at Hickory Hall, located on the ICC North Campus, 5407 N. University. Cost is $95.

The club is offered in two levels, and participants are encouraged to choose the club which best matches their experience and skill. The Youth Programs Coordinator and/or instructor reserve the right to switch a student to the Beginners section if it is most beneficial to the student’s progress and overall learning experience in the course.

  • Club Code Beginner Course: Participants in this club will be given a roadmap to learning. Meetings will be geared toward group learning and team-based projects of the presented material. Club members must be self-motivated, disciplined, and be able to work well with others as well as work independently. Independent work and learning at home will be necessary to the success of this course level.
  • Club Code Advanced Course: Students taking the Advanced Club Code Course must meet the following qualifications:
    • Understanding of HTML5 and a basic understanding of CSS
    • Exposure to web development and debugging tools including notepad, HTML/CSS editors and native browser debugging utilities
    • Knowledge of Javascript (Experience developing web pages with Javascript is a plus)
    • Familiarity with common web development frameworks, such as jQuery, Node.js,  is a plus
    • Understanding of web page layout, design and user experience
    • Fluent in common web terms
    • Curiosity and passion to create things on the web
