The Illinois Central College Library will present a showing of “Koran by Heart,” a documentary about Muslim children in a recitation competition, on Tuesday, October 8, at 7 pm in Room 212 C/D on the ICC East Peoria Campus. Opening comments and a follow-up question-and-answer session will be led by local Muslim scholar, Kamil Mufti, of the Islamic Foundation of Peoria.
The movie shares the events surrounding the International Holy Koran Competition which brings about 100 of Islam’s best young students from around the world to Cairo each year for a Koran memorization competition. The documentary follows the progress of three participants, a girl and two boys, all 10 years old, as they compete against students who, in some cases, are nearly twice their age.
“Koran by Heart” captures the skill, determination, and faith of the young competitors, but never lets the viewer forget that they are children.
The event is free and is part of the Muslim Journeys program that the ICC library is presenting through a national initiative from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. The ICC library is one of 840 libraries and state humanities councils participating in the program.
