Illinois Central College will host Mario Masvidal, a professor of literature and linguistics from Havana, Cuba, on Tuesday, November 17, as part of the college’s International Education Week activities. Masvidal will be available for a meet and greet from 2:30 to 4 pm, in the International Center, Room 304A, on the ICC East Peoria Campus. He then will present a lecture on “Life and Linguistics in Cuba” from 7 to 8:30 pm, in the Arbor Auditorium on the ICC North Campus, located at 5407 N. University St., Peoria. Both events are free and open to the public.
Masvidal’s visit is a result of a trip ICC Vice President of Diversity, International and Adult Education Dr. Rita Ali and other Illinois community college leaders made to Cuba in February. The group learned more about Cuba’s educational system during their visit, which came just after ties between the U.S. and Cuba were re-established. He plans to visit several other community colleges during his visit.
“I traveled to Cuba in February with a group of Community College Presidents from Illinois,” said Ali. “We listened to Professor Masvidal give a two-hour lecture on the history of Cuba. He had no notes and he spoke so artistically that we were all captivated; wanting more and more. His talk here will be a wondrous treat and how timely it is!”
Masvidal was born in Havana, Cuba in 1953. He was a doctoral graduate from the University of Havana in Linguistics. He has dedicated his life to sharing and acquiring knowledge in linguistics and American literature. He has published more than 12 books, academic journal articles and articles and is a founding member of the Linguist Association and Teachers Association of Cuba. Masvidal has spent extensive time abroad sharing his vast knowledge of Cubano culture and his expertise on the great American author, Ernest Hemmingway.
