CTE Month: Helping behind the scenes

February is Career and Technical Education Month! This month we will highlight students from various CTE programs.

Melanie Paden chose to pursue the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program thanks to the influence of a beloved ICC instructor.

“I had a phlebotomy teacher…who was also an MLT that really inspired me to pursue and career in the medical laboratory.”

Melanie found that being a Medical Laboratory Technician was a great fit for her.

“I love science and [helping] people in a ‘behind-the-scenes’ way.”

She also found that ICC was a great fit for her as well. In addition to her busy class schedule, Melanie serves as treasurer of the MLT Club. She credits the ICC staff and faculty with helping to make her experience great.

“The staff are extremely helpful, efficient, and personable.”

Outside of student life at ICC, Melanie also works at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, IL. She says she plans to continue working there after she completes her program at ICC.

In addition to working at Abraham Lincoln Memorial, Melanie plans to transfer to Illinois State University to pursue a Bachelor’s in Medical Laboratory Science. For now, though, she says “I am working on one goal at a time.”

Melanie is grateful for her time as a student at ICC.

“I received such a great education at ICC. My time here has been filled with great memories and relationships I will have forever.”
