Fueling a new career in Diesel Mechanics
Ashley Zimmerman feels right at home working with heavy equipment. As a senior at Delavan High School, it just made sense for this FFA Chapter President to pursue her passion for semi-trucks and diesel equipment at Illinois Central College.
“I chose ICC’s diesel program because I know many graduates that speak highly of it and have gone on to be very successful.”
The ICC Diesel Powered Equipment Technology Program (DPET) trains students over a two-year program to service, repair, and diagnose diesel powered equipment like agriculture machinery, tractors, on-highway trucks, bulldozers, road graders, combines, loaders, and more. Students like Ashley are given hands-on-experience working with state-of-the-art industry technology on a daily basis.
ICC has helped me achieve my goals by offering a challenging program taught by experienced instructors. They hold higher standards than most employers do so we are ready to go straight into the work force after school.
In addition to classroom & lab instruction at ICC, Ashley works as a service tech at KCM Truck & Equipment Repair in Morton, IL. Ashley has had plenty of opportunities to apply her classroom experience performing routine maintenance on semi-trucks and unique jobs including “anything from fabricating part of a trailer to replacing compressors and water pumps. I love the variety I have here at KCM because there’s never a boring day at work and it’s given me a well rounded knowledge of the trucking industry.”
After graduation, Ashley plans to continue servicing heavy machinery at KCM and hopes to one day own her own shop. “The DPET Program has taught me more than I expected to learn and has given me more confidence to do the job I love.”
