Getting Started
Navigating the ICC Library Website (3:16) This tutorial, in wmv format, describes the functions of the different links available on the ICC Library web page.
Searching the Library Catalog
Important Concepts for Research This PowerPoint tutorial will introduce the user to some fundamental ideas to bear in mind when creating research questions.
Intermediate Searching Skills
What Kind of Searcher Are You? The user will learn about three major kinds of searchers, the way that they perform the search process, and what pitfalls may exist for that search type. Additionally, users will learn about Boolean searching – a means to get better results, no matter what type of searcher you are.
How Does All of This Get Into Print? Users will be introduced to the way materials move through the process from creation to print – and the amount of time it takes to get there.
The Heart of the Matter
The Basics of Finding Electronic Articles (3:18) Students are shown in this tutorial the basics of locating databases relative to their research needs. It is in wmv format.
Locating Articles using ProQuest (5:34) This tutorial, in wmv format, is a short introduction to the many features of the ProQuest database and describes searching techniques that can be used in many other databases.
Only for the Brave
Swimming with Sharks Using the Open Web for Quality Research This PowerPoint tutorial is intended to be used in conjunction with the following wmv files (examples) and explores ways to do better than "the first hit on Google" to fill user's research needs.
A Deliberate Intent to Mislead (5:11) This example review, in wmv format, takes users to a REAL site that is designed to deliberately misinform the web searcher and disguise who is actually providing the information. The tutorial also contains tips for reviewing that were not explicitly stated in the accompanying PowerPoint.
More Tips for Web Reviewing (6:21) The wmv tutorial here contains an actual, albeit brief, sample review of a website with more tips that are not covered in the PowerPoint or the other wmv example. Unlike "A Deliberate Attempt to Mislead," however, this site is designed as an instructional tool, but was accidentally taken seriously by the press.
