Cindy Stein Named Illinois Central College Women's Basketball Coach

Posted: April 3, 2012

EAST PEORIA, IL - Cindy Stein, sports commentator and former head women’s basketball coach at the University of Missouri-Columbia, has been named head women’s basketball coach at Illinois Central College. Stein replaces Steve Garber, who resigned in March.

Stein is an alumna of Illinois Central College, where she played women’s basketball and softball under Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame coach Lorene Ramsey. While at ICC Stein played in two NJCAA national basketball tournaments and one NJCAA national softball tournament. She was named to the first team of the NJCAA Softball All-American Team and the second team of the NJCAA Women’s All-American Basketball Team. Stein graduated from Richwoods High School in Peoria, Illinois, where she won varsity letters in volleyball, softball, and basketball.

Stein brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to ICC. She served as women’s basketball head coach for the University of Missouri (Columbia) and Emporia State University in Kansas. She was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and at Bradley University in Peoria, IL. Stein holds a master’s degree in physical education and athletic administration from Central Michigan University, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois-UC in physical education/coaching and an associate degree from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, IL.

During her tenure at Missouri, Stein took her team to the NCAA women’s basketball tournament four times, with a Sweet 16 appearance in 2001. Her teams also appeared four times in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). Stein was named 2001 Coach of the Year by WIN of Columbia, MO, and was inducted in 2001 to the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame. While at Emporia State she was named WBCA National Coach of the Year and was national runner-up in the Division II NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament in 1998. Stein also served as an assistant coach with USA Basketball at the 2003 World University Games.

Stein credits her experience at Illinois Central College for her interest in the coaching position. “My life was positively impacted by my days at ICC under the guidance and leadership of Lorene Ramsey and the excellent teachers, advisors, and administrators that believed in the program and worked hard to support it and enhance it. I couldn’t ask for a better honor than to work for a school that was so instrumental in my development as a person, student, player, and coach,” Stein said.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the addition of Coach Stein to the College,” Athletic Director Sue Sinclair said. “Not only does Cindy bring outstanding coaching experience to the College, but she brings a deep understanding of who we are and where our sports program comes from.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome Coach Stein back to ICC,” Dr. John Erwin, president of ICC, noted. “Coach Stein is the perfect example of what the student-athlete can be. Not only did she excel as an athlete at ICC, but also as a student. Her achievements in the classroom, on the court, and in life should serve as an inspiration for all of our students.”
