New Name, Same Services — “The Children’s Center” offers child care, pre-school experiences
“The Children’s Center” is the new name for the childcare center at Illinois Central College. “We want to make sure families know that our services include both child care as well as pre-school experience,” says Melanie Fleming, director. The DCFS-licensed child care is also accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and uses interactive play experiences to promote learning and fun. “We’ve been here for many years, and the services that we provide haven’t really changed,” she says.
We provide care for children of students and employees as well as the community at large, Fleming says. They coordinate with financial aid and assistance from the Child Care Connection to help make care affordable for qualifying students. The center offers full-time classrooms as well as a part-time classroom to accommodate varying schedules and needs. “If a mom or dad needs coverage for the two mornings each week they’re on campus, we can provide that,” she says. “Just like we can provide full-time service Monday through Friday.” Hours are 6:45 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday.
“This semester we have openings in our hourly pre-school (part-time ) for ages 2 – 5 as well as openings in our 4- and 5-year-old room which we refer to as “pre-K,”” says Fleming.
“We promote social, emotional, motor and cognitive development through a play environment,” she says. “Our staff includes both experienced early childhood educators as well as our own ICC students who are enrolled in the child development program. Our top priority is proving a safe, healthy and nurturing environment for our children.”
