Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)

Myths and Facts

Myth: It could never happen to me
Facts: All women are potential victims for sexual assault: females of any age, race, class, religion, occupation, education, or physical description. Men can be victims, too.

Myth: Women lie about being raped to protect their reputation
Facts: The incidence of false reporting is three percent to five percent, the same as other felonies. It is far more likely that rape is under reported.

Myth: Anyone who gets drunk or takes drugs is asking for it
Facts: The inability to give consent is not "asking for it." Forcing sexual contact on another person without consent is against the law.
