Blackboard Support

Using Blackboard (Students)

Blackboard is highly customizable. Therefore, this information covers general Blackboard features that are common among Blackboard course sites. However, instructors can customize many features of their course sites from the size and color of the buttons to the amount and type of content within the site.

You will find materials and information in your course by using the buttons located on the left side of the screen. The buttons can vary in color and labels so read and explore the information under each button. Some of the commonly used buttons are anouncements, course information, course documents, assignments, communication.

The Course Map opens in a new window and contains hyperlinks to all areas of the course.

* If you can't find something, ask your instructor to show you how to find it.

Announcements
Course Announcements contain messages from the instructor. You will find a link to these messages (organized by course) in the "My Announcements" panel of the "Blackboard @ ICC" tab. The announcements is often the first page of your course also.

Sometimes Announcements may have links to other locations within the course. Announcements may be viewed by the day, week, month, or for the entirety of the course. Simply click on the appropriate tab to view announcements for that period.

Staff Information
Your instructor may post office hours, contact information, and other pertinent notes for the course in this section.

External Links
In some courses faculty members have a button for External Links. This page displays a name, a hyperlink to a Website and a description for the destination. The links can be launched in the active Blackboard window or in a new window. They often provide additional information or help for the course.

Logging Out
If you do not logout of Blackboard, the next user who accesses the Blackboard site on the computer you used will have access to your classes and personal information.

Blackboard Student Manual
After you login to Blackboard you can access the official Blackboard User's Guide:

  • Enter one of your courses
  • Click on the Tools button on the left side of the screen
  • Click User Manual (A new window containing the User Manual opens)
  • The contents are displayed on the left, click on book icons to view subtopics
  • Click on a Topic to view Help for that topic in the right side of the window
