Cougars Net Triple Digits in Win Over Gogebic

The ICC women’s basketball hit the century mark for the second time this season, cruising to a 108-55 win over Gogebic (MI) Community College on Saturday afternoon at Ramsey Gym. All players reached the scoring column, including five Cougars who reached double figures, as ICC shot 52% from the field (41-79) and out-rebounded GCC 56-37. With the win, ICC reached the 20 win plateau for an amazing 42nd time in program history (since 1969-70), and the Cougars now stand at 20-7, while Gogebic fell to 15-12.

This one was decided early, led by the dynamic duo of Jasmine Levy and Bailey Larsen. Those two ladies combined to score the first 14 points, propelling ICC to a 14-0 lead on scores inside and two Larsen treys (assists Krystal Walker). The Cougar defense stymied the Samsons while the offense stayed in high gear behind Kellyn Maynard, Abby Coates, Emma Henderson, and Madison Faulkner to give ICC a 26-8 lead after the first period.

Gogebic evened things out in the second quarter as ICC experimented defensively and GCC cut their deficit to 36-22 at the 5:34 mark, but an Aubrey Magro three-pointer at the end of the shot clock got ICC back on track, followed by a Kathy Pinnock-Branford shot block that she turned into a layup (assist Isreal Evans). Sia Williams and Kennedy Banks got in on the scoring action with baskets and Faulkner and Henderson finished off the first half scoring to put ICC up 51-31 at half.

The Cougars’ depth continued to show in the second half, as they outscored GCC 34-13 in the third to continue to increase their lead and the team subbed liberally in the second half for the win.

Former ICC softball player, Nicole (Kurth) Duncheon, addressed the crowd at halftime to share her experiences as an athlete.
