Cougars Land RedHawks: End LMC’s 23 Home Game Win Streak!
A strong first quarter and commanding rebounding edge helped the #14 ICC women’s basketball team post a 68-59 win over Lake Michigan College on Wednesday night in Benton Harbor, MI. With the win, the Cougars snapped LMC’s 23-game home winning streak, and moves to 18-6 overall, while LMC slips to 15-5.
Krystal Walker scored the first points as the Cougars trailed 6-4 before going on a 9-0 run, started by a Bailey Larsen basket (assist Aubrey Magro) and three-pointer. Larsen found Abby Coates inside for two, and Kathy Pinnock Branford hit Jasmine Levy for a score putting ICC up 15-4. A Madison Faulkner jumper (assist Levy) and Kellyn Maynard old-fashioned three-point play in transition (assist Faulkner) put the Cougars ahead 20-10. Sia Williams beat the buzzer with a twenty-foot trey and the Blue & Gold were up 25-12 after the first frame.
A Levy basket gave the Cougars their biggest advantage on the night at 27-12, but the hosts turned the tables, forcing seven turnovers and outscoring ICC 18-8 to close to within 39-30 at recess.
Walker opened the second half scoring with a bucket, followed by a Coates basket inside; but LMC countered with scores of their own to keep within striking distance. They closed to within 48-43, but Kennedy Banks answered inside followed by another Walker score and the Cougars went into the fourth quarter up 53-44.
The Blue and Gold countered the lopsided free throw disparity (on the evening LMC was 15-27 from the charity stripe while ICC was just 1-1) by controlling the boards (44-24) and hitting big shots at the end of possessions. Faulkner swished a jumper from the elbow, followed by a Williams basket to keep ICC up 58-47. Levy scored on a spin move (despite having a dislodged contact lens) but the RedHawks kept battling. Pinnock-Branford snuck inside the paint for a runner and ICC was up 62-54. Walker, Larsen, and Levy closed out the scoring for the Cougars for the final margin, giving ICC the hard fought win.
