Banks’ Big Day Leads Way in Win Over Bulldogs

Kennedy Banks’s career high 21 points helped lead the #18 ICC women’s basketball team to a 74-56 win over South Suburban College on Saturday afternoon in South Holland. The 6’0 sophomore from Dunlap went 9-11 from the field, while the Cougars dished out 26 assists to score 31 field goals to get the win.

ICC set the tone defensively from the start, bottling up the Bulldog inside game and turning defense into offense as Kellyn Maynard got three layups on nice passes from Bailey Larsen, Sia Williams, and Krystal Walker. Maynard also drew a charge and then Aubrey Magro and Bailey Larsen each splashed in three-pointers to give ICC an 18-10 first quarter lead.
Earlier in the week during practice, the Cougars had former Morton boys’ basketball coach Jarrett Brown share some zone offensive concepts which paid dividends against the SSC zone. ICC went on a 12-2 run to open the second period as Madison Faulkner and Banks took turns slicing up the Bulldog zone, giving the Cougars a 30-12 lead. Faulkner & Banks combined for 14 points in the quarter, and after Sia Williams took a charge, Larsen nailed a trey and Kathy Pinnock-Branford hit a runner to put ICC up 38-28 at intermission.

The teams traded hoops before the Bulldogs cut their deficit to 41-35 midway through the 3rd period. The Cougars slapped on a full-court press that stalled the SSC rhythm as Magro, Maynard, Pinnock-Branford, Abby Coates, and Emma Henderson turned up the pressure to get the momentum back. Magro, Maynard and Pinnock-Branford each netted layups, while Henderson cashed in on a trey and 15-footer followed by a Walker jumper and the Cougars held a 58-43 lead after three stanzas.

The Cougar defense held steady in the fourth as Walker hit Williams for a layup and Banks and Faulkner stayed hot, combining for eight points to keep SSC at bay and give the Cougars the win.

Fun Facts

After the win, the Cougars made their annual trek to Coach Redeker’s parents’ house for Schwan’s ice cream, homemade fudge and caramel sauce, chocolate chip cookies, and brownies. The ladies got a brief tour of the KMR dairy operation and Lely milking robot, and also got to see the unfriendly farm cats and cute baby calves being fed milk. Special thanks to Kenny and Martha for the tasty desserts, as well as brother Fuzz and nephew John for their time. #1 Cougar fan and birthday guy Jon Anderson and his parents also joined the team for the fun evening.
