Cougars can’t close out Lynx: Lincoln 67, ICC 64

The #8 ranked ICC women’s basketball team dropped a tough 67-64 decision at #23 Lincoln College on Wednesday night in a Region 24 contest. ICC is now 15-6 overall and 3-2 in Region 24 play, while Lincoln moves to 16-1 and 2-0 in region play.

The Cougars controlled the first half by working their inside game and playing solid defense on Lincoln’s shooters. Abby Coates got free inside to score six points to help the Cougars take a 14-11 first quarter lead. The teams battled back and forth in the second quarter as Coates, Jasmine Levy, and Madison Faulkner scored from inside and out, and ICC took a 32-26 halftime advantage as Kathy Pinnock-Branford scored on a nifty baseline drive in the final :10 seconds.

Kellyn Maynard started the second half off with a basket to give the Cougars their biggest lead of the night at 34-26, but the Lynx turned on the jets and scored on their next five possessions to close to within 40-36. Faulkner and Levy answered with baskets but LC hit back-to-back treys against the Cougar zone to take a 48-47 lead heading into the final period.

Lincoln started the fourth quarter on a run to go up 57-50 but the Cougars battled back on baskets by Levy, Pinnock-Branford, Coates, and Bailey Larsen to go up 58-57. The see-saw battle continued down the stretch with the score tied at 64-all but LC nailed a three-pointer for the go-ahead score with :19 seconds remaining. The Cougars had a chance for the tie with two shots, but they were long and Lincoln got the win. The Cougar defense held LC to just 34% in the first half, but the Lynx caught fire to shoot 51% in the second half to go along with scoring 26 points off of ICC’s turnovers on the night. Free throw shooting was poor for both teams, with ICC going 4-11 (including 1-6 in the decisive fourth quarter) and Lincoln going 6-18.
