ICC tops South Sub: #11 ICC 62, South Suburban 53
The #11 ICC women’s basketball team put together a solid effort for most of Wednesday night, en route to a 62-53 win over South Suburban College (South Holland, IL) at Ramsey Gym. The Cougars nailed six three-pointers, out-rebounded the Bulldogs by a 55-30 margin, and limited the guests to 33% shooting from the field to get the win. ICC is now 14-5 overall, while South Suburban drops to 12-8.
The opening minutes were a little slow until Jasmine Levy took a charge that got the Cougars going as Madison Faulkner scored inside (assist Bailey Larsen), and then Larsen nailed back-to-back three-pointers (assists Sia Williams and Emma Henderson) to give ICC a 9-2 lead. The Bulldogs answered with a couple of baskets before Faulkner scored again (assist Henderson), Abby Coates added an offensive putback, and Isreal Evans connected on a jumper in the lane (assist Larsen) putting ICC up 15-11 after the first quarter.
The Cougars took an 18-11 lead on another Evans bucket (assist Pinnock-Branford), but SSC quickly closed the gap to 18-15. Faulkner answered with three straight baskets (assists Larsen and Levy), Evans took a charge followed by two Henderson treys (assists Pinnock-Branford), and Kellyn Maynard ended the half with a basket inside on a nice feed from Larsen to take a 33-21 halftime lead.
ICC used their inside play to keep things rolling as Coates (assist Larsen), Faulkner (an old-fashioned three-point play on a Henderson assist), and Levy (assist Williams) scored to take a 40-25 lead at the 5:34 mark of the third. Aubrey Magro nailed a jumper followed by another Levy score to go up 46-27. Henderson splashed in a three-pointer (assist Magro) followed by a Kennedy Banks basket and ICC coasted into the fourth quarter with a 52-31 lead. The second and third quarters were filled with excellent team work and very sound team defense; definitely things the Cougars will continue to take confidence in.
Larsen nailed a three-pointer (assist Williams) to give ICC their biggest lead on the night at 55-31 but that is when SSC increased their intensity and closed the game on a 22-7 run to make the score closer than what the game really was, but ICC held on for the win.
