ICC grinds out win vs. McHenry in 1st round of CHT; #5 ICC 59, McHenry 42
The #5 ICC women’s basketball team used the old-fashioned recipe of rebounding and defense to gain a 59-42 victory over McHenry County College (7-6) in the opening round of the 37th Annual Holiday Tournament at Ramsey Gym on Thursday evening. While the Cougars shot only 34% from the field on the night, they did control the boards (55-31 advantage) and held the Scots to 27% field goal shooting (13-48), to move their record to 10-2 on the season.
ICC took an early 9-4 lead, with freshman Emma Henderson having a hand in all of the initial Cougar baskets. She assisted Abby Coates on a backdoor layup for the first two points, nailed a three from the deep corner, and assisted Madison Faulkner and Coates on the next tallies. Sophomore forward Jasmine Levy (Proviso East HS) saw her first action of the season and made her presence known, scoring on two offensive put-backs and another layup on an assist by Kathy Pinnock-Branford to give ICC an 18-12 advantage after the first period of play.
The Cougars’ scoring in the second quarter was much like the temperatures outside (insert your own adjective here…frigid, dreadful, cold, etc) as they managed only two field goals in the stanza (both Bailey Larsen scores), but luckily they did add six free throws to forge a 28-20 halftime lead.
The Blue and Gold finally hit their stride on the offensive end as Sia Williams connected on two free throws, Coates scored on a high-low feed from Faulkner, and then Williams hit Larsen for a score to take a double digit lead, 34-23 with 6 minutes to play in the third. The Cougars went up 40-25 on scores by Faulkner, Coates, and Larsen (assists Henderson, Pinnock-Branford, and Coates) to get a little breathing room at the end of the third.
The Scots drew to within 42-31 to make things a little interesting before Henderson and Aubrey Magro connected on long-range bombs (assists Kellyn Maynard), followed by a Larsen trey (assist Pinnock-Branford) and ICC cruised to the finish with the win.
