Women’s Basketball Weekend Highlights

Cougars Shoot Down Gogebic In Victory

The #10 ICC women’s basketball team opened the game on an 16-0 run and never looked back, defeating Gogebic Community College (Ironwood, MI) on Saturday afternoon, February 11, at the Ramsey Gym.  The Cougars nailed seven 3-pointers on the day, dished out 21 assists and limited the Lady Samsons to 35% field goal shooting to get the win.

After a 2-all tie, Bailey Larsen (2) and Brandi Fier (1) connected on back-to-back-to-back three-pointers (assists Jasmine Elliott, Serena Meiss, and Sommer Burgard) to get the Cougars rolling.  Elliott scored inside (assist Burgard), followed by a Meiss field goal (assist Larsen) to go up 18-2 at the 6:14 mark.  Kellyn Maynard and Burgard scored inside (assists Krystal Walker and Brianna Henson) to make the score 22-6, but Gogebic closed the quarter on a run to draw to within 26-14 after the first period.

The ICC defense forced the Lady Samsons into four straight turnovers to start the second quarter and cashed them into scores by Elliott, Fier, Meiss, and Henson to push their lead to 34-14.  The Cougars continued to use good ball movement to create scores and took a 51-25 halftime advantage on a put back by Maynard to end the half.  The second half was much the same, with ICC holding a 69-37 lead after the third and finishing out the game to move their overall record to 19-6.
