Women’s Basketball: Cougar Ladies Bounce Back Big vs. John Wood

Red-hot shooting and feisty team defense carried the #7 ICC women’s basketball team to a 68-36 victory over John Wood CC at Ramsey Gym on Monday evening, January 30.  The Cougars shot 54% from the field on the night (67% in the 1st half) while harassing the Blazers into 25% shooting (16-64) to move their overall record to 17-6 and 5-1 in Region 24 play.

The teams traded scores to start the game, with ICC holding a narrow 12-11 lead at the 3:04 mark in the first.  The Cougars closed the quarter on an 8-2 run started by a Sydney McClintock layup (assist Brandi Fier), followed by scores in the paint by Fier, Krystal Walker, and Jasmine Elliott (assists Kellyn Maynard, Brianna Henson, and Fier) to take a 20-13 lead.  Henson helped the Cougars keep their foot on the gas as she assisted Bailey Larsen on a three-ball and then hit Maynard for a layup.  Larsen returned the favor to Henson, hitting her on a layup and the Cougars took a 27-13 edge with 7:18 to play in the half.  JW closed their gap to 27-19, but ICC responded with a 16-0 run, anchored by two long-range back-to-back bombs by Larsen (assists Fier) and a layup by Maynard (assist Fier).  Other highlights of the run included a rebound put-back by Kalyn Lyons, a Serena Meiss basket, and a shot in the paint by Elliott (assist Meiss)  put the hosts up 43-19 at intermission.

The second half was much of the same as ICC maintained their energy, taking a 60-27 advantage at the end of the third.  ICC took their biggest lead of the night at 64-27 on a Meiss score (assist Sommer Burgard) and coasted to the win.
