Cougars’ Team Play Sinks Vikings
Krystal Walker’s career high 17 points led four players in double figures as ICC defeated Jefferson College (MO) 68-59 on Saturday afternoon at Ramsey Gym. The Cougars dished out a season high 25 assists, leading to 29 field goals and the balanced offensive attack.
While Walker had the game-high scoring honors, it was fellow freshman Kellyn Maynard who set the tone for this game. Maynard was a wrecking ball on defense, harassing the Vikings into miscues and then dishing out five assists in the first period alone. Kalyn Lyons (2 baskets), Sommer Burgard, and Walker all scored off Maynard’s dimes to give ICC an 11-7 lead. Bri Henson got in on the giving, as she hit Maynard and Brandi Fier for scores, followed by another Fier field goal to go up 17-11. The Cougars stretched their lead to 28-16 early in the second period on a Bailey Larsen field goal (assist Henson), but the Vikings countered with a 7-0 run to climb back to 28-23. Two Henson free throws and two Burgard baskets pushed ICC back up 34-25, but Jeff Co battled back to within 36-31 at the half.
Walker nailed a three-ball to open the half on a set play (assist Maynard), but the Vikings kept chipping away during the quarter, dwindling ICC’s lead to 50-48. But Walker answered with another trey on a kick-out from Jasmine Elliott, followed by a Burgard score (assist Larsen) and the Cougars had a 55-50 cushion heading into the last quarter. The Cougars kept Jeff Co at bay with strong defense and a nice fast break score from Walker to Henson to take their biggest lead, 66-53, and finished the game from there.
