ICC Shows Second Day Improvement at UIS – Finishes 6th
A tournament best 22-stroke improvement from day one to day two highlighted Illinois Central College’s 6th place finish in the Dan Salisbury Memorial Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Illinois-Springfield at Panther Creek Country Club, Oct 1-2. A myriad of mistakes plagued the Cougars in shooting a fall-season worst 316 the first day. ICC, unofficially, hit six balls into water hazards, three out-of-bounds, and suffered from a four-putt and an unplayable lie.
ICC rebounded with a 6-over-par 294 on day two of the event. Seth Rebbe (Petersburg) paced the Braves in the second round with an even-par 72, Chase Picken (Manito) added a 73, Jake Plummer (East Peoria) a 74 while Jordan Perry (Lincoln) and Lucas Munter (Metamora) each had 75s.
“If we wouldn’t have turned a 290-something into a 316 in the first round, it could have been an exciting finish for us,” ICC coach Bo Ryan said. “Errant shots occur, I realize that. But never should they happen with the frequency they did during round one.”
Host UIS won the event with rounds of 295-293.
ICC Nipped by Bradley JV
While each team was low on the opponent’s home course, the Bradley junior varsity men’s golf team nipped Illinois Central College 308-310 in a 36-hole match played Oct. 9 at Lick Creek Golf Course and Oct. 10 at WeaverRidge Golf Club. The Braves shot 306 Sunday at Lick Creek while ICC managed only a 310. Monday at WeaverRidge, the Cougars had a 300 compared to BU’s 302. BU’s Matthew Specht was medalist in the two-day event with a pair of 73s. Chase Picken (Manito) led ICC with a 75-73. Jordan Perry (Lincoln) added a 79-73, Seth Rebbe (Petersburg) a 74-84, Jake Plummer (East Peoria) 84-76 and Lucas Munter (Metamora) 82-78.
Michael Greenan and Cole Brown had a 94 and a 97, respectively, playing for ICC at WeaverRidge. “It good to see the two local college compete against each other. It’s been a long time in the making,” said ICC coach Bo Ryan. Ryan and BU head coach Jeff Roche are talking out the details of a possible match-play event in the spring.
