Stan Mendenhall’s Story

How and when did your fitness journey begin?

I have been active in fitness activities for most of my life. I played basketball into my 40’s and enjoyed running for many years. But, as I grew older the toll from various injuries came due. Rather than feeling energized by workouts and runs I was returning home in pain. I knew I needed to do something. Last summer, when the Fitness Center offered personal training I thought it was worth a try. I began working with Vanessa Cruz last July and we began by setting goals for my fitness. We progressively move through short term goals to reach my larger goal of overall fitness.

What is your current workout routine?

I work with Vanessa twice a week at the Fitness Center for an hour each session. I workout an additional 3-4 times a week at the Fitness Center or an alternative such as running.

What keeps you motivated to continue your exercise routine?

I have several motivations. First, getting older I realize the value of keeping fit. Second, having goals keeps me motivated. And third and most important to my motivation, Vanessa adds challenging variety to every workout. No workout is ever the same. it is fun to attempt to meet a new challenge each session. it may take several sessions (or more) to achieve them, but that is what makes it fun.

Do you have advice for those just getting started?

Find the right personal trainer who will identify your needs and assist you in planning goals to meet those needs. Then stay with it.

What’s the greatest benefit you get from exercise?

The most immediate benefit was the elimination of pain and discomfort in everyday activities. Through RESET specialty sessions with Vanessa and the accompanying workouts targeted at problem areas, I have increased my mobility and strength far beyond any expectations.
